GRP-178

gamma-black.png

Galactic Registered Phenomena: 178

Object Class: Gamma-Black

Hazard Types: Aggression Hazard, Ballistic Hazard, Extreme Temperature Hazard, Ecological Hazard, Sentient Hazard, Grouped Hazard

Additional Properties: Titanic.

Containment Protocols: GRP-178 at the time of writing, is considered a Class-V threat. All GRPC Captains are to stay clear of any ECHO-8 imposed quarantined space, especially GRP-178 infected worlds. If contact is unavoidable, crews should deploy their standard-issue Class-IV Cryogenic Blasters for the purpose of hindering GRP-178's growth.

Asteroid fragments discovered to contain GRP-178 are to be destroyed with nuclear missiles.

Description: Each GRP-178 is an amorphous extra-terrestrial extremophile. Biologically unknown due to their hostility, GRP-178 gives off extreme amounts of heat, giving it the appearance of lava. GRP-178 are agile predators, displaying a tendency to attack all forms of life, including human subjects and/or plant-based lifeforms. Victims are typically completely burnt through physical contact with GRP-178.

GRP-178's most concerning anomaly is the ability to rapidly increase body mass via melting solid materials on a molecular level, organic or inorganic, absorbing them into itself. Estimation indicates that a single GRP-178 instance can grow twice its original size in a 24 hour period. Larger instances of GRP-178 grow at an accelerated rate depending on their original biomass. It is estimated that a single uncontrolled instance of GRP-178 can completely submerge a planet in a matter of a month or less.

GRP-178 reproduces via cellular division, where GRP-178 splits off into two smaller instances half its original size. However, due to GRP-178's biochemistry, the study of GRP-178's biological function is impossible.

Information obtained from GRPC indicates that GRP-178 is a planetary-based predator that seeks out planets as reproduction grounds. Should GRP-178 instances grow in size and completely cover a planet's surface, GRP-178 will enter Stage 2 of its reproduction system, where the planet spontaneously combusts through unknown means1. GRP-178 instances covering the planet's surface can attach themselves to asteroid fragments created from the explosion. GRP-178 instances on the asteroids at this stage enter a theorized hibernating state until said asteroids land on another planet.

Discovery: GRP-178 was discovered during a routine observation on TRAPPIST-1f2 and the Salkai3 alien species native to TRAPPIST-1f. It was observed that an instance of GRP-178 landed on TRAPPIST-1f, resulting in the declaration of a global emergency among the Salkai leaders.

After approval from GD-Xeno leader, Lucas Farvald, the GRPC utilized cryogenic cannons in an attempt to slow down the growth of GRP-178. A specialized xenopsychlogist team was deployed in an effort to communicate with the Salkai leaders.

Despite reluctance from the majority of Salkai leaders, mainly due to the language barriers, communication between the humans and Salkais was made via drawings from the Salkais4. During the first round of evacuation, GRP-178 had already submerged 35% of the planet.

During the last two evacuation rounds, GRP-178 had submerged an estimated 75% of the planet. Evacuation ships were attacked by GRP-178 via launching lava projectiles towards them. Five of these ships were hit by GRP-178 during the attack. These projectiles became smaller instances of GRP-178, attempting to breach the hull of the ship and attack the crew members inside.

Around 373 casualties were reported in total, from both humans and Salkais. Observation of the planet TRAPPIST-1f after the evacuation revealed GRP-178's latent ability to induce spontaneous combustion in planets.
