Interviewed: Al █████
Interviewer: Dr. Miller
Foreword: The following is the interview of Al █████. Interview deviates highly from a regular interview format.
<Begin Log>
Dr. Miller: Please state your name and formal position while working at [REDACTED].
Al █████: Al █████, Security.
Dr. Miller: Thank you. Now, can you tell us-
Al █████: Listen, Doc, I have been very cooperative with you guys even though you pretty much abducted me. I contacted you on my own accord to tell you what I know. You can ask all the questions you want after I tell you what happened the way I want to tell it. Sound like a deal?
Dr. Miller: If you do answer the questions, it is a deal.
Al █████: Alright. So, I was an Ex-Marine working security. One of my security buddies hooked me up with the hospital job. Normal hospital above ground, real state of the art. Has lower levels which only high-level clearance personnel and our security captain can enter. No idea what happened in those lower labs nor did anyone who was working above ground. I was above ground security, so I was permitted to patrol with a holstered PSM 5.45, three round burst/single shot, pretty fancy. Above ground, behind two clearance doors and one checkpoint, was an armory for 'extra security' which contained one rack of Vitaly-SN's and another rack of body armor. Sometimes I wondered if we were cops in that place.
Only access to lower levels was one big security elevator and a ladder in the elevator shaft leading to the lower levels. You were literally unable to open this elevator without the right clearance. It was like what you guys do with your cards on some of the doors here.
Our captain always messed with us telling us they did 'unworldly experiments' down there creating human/animal hybrids. This was the type of shit we did to pass the time as we worked 14-hour shifts patrolling this hospital looking important.
Section of interview removed due to being off topic.
Dr. Miller: Please stay on topic.
Al █████: Right.
Anyway, the only time we saw anyone leaving from that one lift to the lower levels is during the late hours of the nights or arriving in the early mornings in groups usually. They never talked to anyone or made eye contact. We always thought of them as snobs. One day our captain disclosed to us off the record that there was a 'Special Security Force' operating on those lower levels.
Now onto what you really want to hear. One night in the middle of winter we were working. 12 of us total on security detail at the time. Other than us 12, there were just secretaries and patients waiting for transfer and nurses on hand throughout the hospital. In case of a lower level emergency our protocol was to lock down the lift-housing/security hub section of the building to separate us from the rest of the hospital. The only way we knew when to lock down was a signal from the lower level to us. The lights on the walls in that section would turn an emergency red. Only one comm center from above ground to bottom which is manned always and only used in extreme cases of emergency. It only went one way, lower to upper. The way we locked down was by dropping a steel gate over the bridge/walkway on both ends and signaling the main hospital's security that our section was on lockdown. They'd then make sure that their end was locked down and separated from us. Not once in the four years I worked that job did we have a lockdown happen besides once, that is the story I am going to share.
As I said, one night in the middle of winter 12 of us are working detail. Seven of us are sitting at the checkpoint area playing cards and having fun, generally just trying to kill time. Our captain is with us, other five are on patrol throughout the rest of our sector of the building. We're sitting there shooting the shit when suddenly our main building's lighting flicks over to the 'Emergency Red.' Our captain stops mid-sentence and looks up at the light. His mouth open with an amazed look on his face. He stutters, "Uhh…uhh fuck…" Then yells in his stupid accent, "Lockdown now! Get this place secure! Move your asses!” We're all like, "What the fuck is the deal?" We're taking our sweet time and then we hear our captain over our comms, "Hurry up and get to the armory entrance asap!" We're all in panic mode now not knowing what the fuck is going on. The emergency lights are flashing, and our side is locked down.
Me and another kid on detail finish up locking down our section, then rush over to the armory entrance. Everyone is there and panicking besides the captain and these two dudes in uniform. Everyone is like, "Who the fuck are these two guys?" This guy named '█████' pipes up and says, "Uh, Captain, who are these two?" Our captain gulps and stutters again, "Our uh…supervisors. They'll be taking over from here on out." They never gave us their names so besides from their stupid fucking suits and accents I have nothing else to describe them by. So, we'll call them Suit 1 and Suit 2.
Suit 1 pipes up, "Go" and motions towards the armory. Our Captain then yells, "Move it! Let's go!" We rush into the armory and our captain starts handing out Vitalys and body armor. Not once in my time working this job before that night did we have to do any of this besides initial training. Suit 1 says, "Move to elevator now." Suit 2 motions towards our captain, the comms officer, and some ex-beret and says, "You three with me now." They move into the security room opposite of the elevator. Suit 1 says, "Rest of you. With me. We go to the elevator." He starts positioning us like a squad leader.
"American and █████ you go right corridor, position by bench."
"You five with me in front of elevator."
"You two cover left corridor."
"Weapons ready."
We see Suit 2 behind the security glass using the emergency comms, our Captain and the other two with him have looks of dread on their face.
The glass room is soundproofed. Only way sound can escape to the lobby is if it's buzzed in through a comm on the window. Suit 2 buzzes into Suit 1, "Alright get ready, lift en route." This is the first time we've seen Suit 1 break posture. He kind of looks gassed, he quickly regains his posture and says, "Ready up focus, if I say so you shoot, okay?" We nod.
We see the 'Elevator in Use' sign light up. I notice Suit 1 is starting to sweat. Beret behind glass is freaking out on our captain while motioning towards the elevator frantically like an argument. Our captain is visibly trying to calm him down. Comms guy is bitching at Suit 2 while Suit 2 continues looking steadily towards elevator. Beret was usually the most bad-ass composed of us all. Never seen him like this. I look towards one of the five guys around Suit 1 and I notice three are looking at me with a, 'What the fuck is going on?' look on their faces. Suit 1 finally breaks the awkward silent halt and draws a holstered weapon which I didn't notice he had and points it towards the elevator. I notice Suit 1 reach down to buzz our lobby comm, "Are we ready?" Suit 2 replies, "We are go."
We have no idea how deep the shaft is or how long it takes from the elevator to get from top to bottom. We hear cracks and clacks coming from the shaft. Sounds like distant gunshots. We hear rattling and the sound of screeching metal coming through. I assume the screeching metal is the outer walls of the elevator being forced against the walls of the elevator shaft.
The door to the elevator opens and it's pitch black within the elevator. No one can tell what they are looking at. It's pretty much a black mass or even better described as a void. Suit 1 is shaking and my captain's mouth along with everyone’s behind the glass is just wide open. Everyone slowly lowers their weapons and some even mutter, "What the fuck?" We all stare at this black void not knowing what to do.
Suit 1 tries to yell, "Fir-"
A loud screech rings out from the mass causing us to hurl over and hold our hands to our ears in panic. Most of us lose composure and drop our weapons. Suit 1 holds posture and rings off a couple shots. The shrieking gets immensely louder until we are all eventually on the ground. We're all hurled on the floor besides everyone behind the glass. Our captain is visibly shaking. Suit 2's mouth is completely open. The CO is pretty much shivering in a corner. The beret isn't any better off.
One of the five with Suit 1 reaches for his weapon, we all follow. It is now completely silent besides our groans and people panicking and yelling. Someone says, "What the fuck do we do?" Suit 1 raises his weapon and yells once again, "Open fire fuckers!" We raise our weapons and we all empty a full magazine not knowing if we did anything. From my perspective, it appeared like we were just emptying ammo into a dark room. Finally, someone yells, "What the fuck are we shooting at?" Suit 1 finally breaks composure and looks back at Suit 2, "What the fuck do we do?"
The void begins to expand outwards into the corridor. Suit 2 is now pale as shit, he manages to buzz out, "Uh… Fuck… Fire! Kill it!" By now we finished reloading and began emptying another clip into the void. The more we fired into it the more it expanded, like the fucking blob from Ghostbusters. One of the foreign details in the left corridor lost composure and said, "Fuck this.” He got up and ran.
Most of us were scared shitless and had no idea what was going on. We were just mindlessly firing because we were told to. I then look into the void. Like I look deeply into it. I notice that it's not just black and if you actually look in you can see things. I look in and I see little swirls of light grey/blueish/reddish colors. It was mesmerizing. Suit 1 breaks the fascination and yells at the unit who broke formation, "Get back here or face sentence!"
The elevator begins to make the groaning sound that steel makes when bending. We then hear a loud snap and the elevator begins to fall. We hear nothing but the sound of screeching metal for about ten seconds followed by a distant crash. The metal doors of the lift begin to close. Everyone is visibly scared and shaking. Suit 1 is bent over gasping for breath and the foreign unit who fled was in the back corner of the corridor puking.
Out of nowhere about 20-30 suits begin coming from the walkway that was supposed to be locked down, rushing in and securing the area. We were all quickly taken separately to different undisclosed locations and debriefed on not too share this with anyone. Our contract is then ended, and we were given a 'lump sum pay.' I heard from one of the guys I kept in contact with from the detail that they hired 32 new contracts for detail not too long after. After that day I never saw most of those guys again. I was flown back to America within 3 days.
Dr. Miller: That was quite informative.
Al █████: I'm guessing all that writing you were doing were my questions eh?
Dr. Miller nods.
Al █████: Oh and before you ask, no, I don't have any way of finding out who those guys were. Trust me, I tried. The guys I kept in contact with didn't know who they were working for same as me. We got paid in cash.
Dr. Miller: Understood, but how did you find out about us, then?
Al █████: [REDACTED] Guess you guys weren't as careful as you thought.
Dr. Miller: Have you told anybody else about us or what you saw at the hospital?
Al █████: And risk getting clubbed by some guys doing what I do? Of course not.
Dr. Miller: Can you go into more detail about what you saw in the elevator?
Al █████: I'll do you one better, I'll draw it for you. I doubt you'll believe it, though.
Dr. Miller rips off a piece of paper from his notepad and hands it and a pen to the subject. The subject then draws on the paper for approximately 24 seconds. When finished, he hands it back to Dr. Miller to review.
No dialogue for 19 seconds.
Al █████: Don't think about it for too long.
Dr. Miller: Why did you contact us?
Al █████: Honestly, I'm just looking for work.
