This article is the result of taking a real-life inspiration and playing it almost completely straight. The imagery is well-done, I'll admit, but it doesn't lend itself to an interesting narrative.
In place of a story is a sequence of Malthus raids, which are the reason I read this article, but the connection really isn't there. I don't believe that Malthus is hell-bent on retrieving this object to view evolutionary catastrophes; it feels like that was a justification made in post.
I read up on the inspiration for this article and I was disappointed. There was so much more potential for even a relatively straight adaptation of the myth. 1/5
How exactly RPC-991 achieves the ability to observe past-events is unknown, though it was claimed that it produced images by decoding electromagnetic radiation left behind during past events, though the only plausible form of electromagnetic radiation needed for the viewing of past-events would be gamma rays emitted by GRBs.
