Review #3 of my unprompted Malthus binge. I was concerned by this article's age, and the slowness and general lack of intrigue by the end of the description left me a bit unmotivated. Still I pushed on, and I'm glad I did, because then we get to "That Time Charles Darwin Turned Into a Tortoise" and it becomes really odd and funny. The first interview is some good comic relief, and the second one is kind of eye-opening and potent.
I think the last two addendums are a little weak? Yes, the tie-in with real events is clever, but narratively it doesn't feel like an interesting conclusion. The whole "made extinct by the Authority" detail is odd to me, anyway. I know the article takes the effort to justify this in the third "Acquisition" paragraph, but it still strikes me as very odd that they would go out of their way to render a species extinct and neutralize an anomaly that could definitely be contained. Like, they're just turtles.
In spite of a few complaints, this was still an enjoyable read. I didn't expect the first triumph of my Malthus marathon to be this overall light-hearted, but I'll take it. 5/5
