Last Sunday, we held the first live staff meeting in five years: here's the recording. Also, Hazard Poker contest submissions just closed, so get your final votes in now!
This meeting, we looked back at responses from the recent demographics poll while planning for the future of the wiki, Discord community, and beyond. Thank you to all staff who participated, and to the community members who listened in and wrote to us in the text chat while we were live.
Summary
- 6:01: (OPEN) I mention that some users have expressed concern with a lack of professionalism in the community image, especially regarding the Discord Community Server. Malfestance suggests restoring #rpc-general's civility rule to regular use, which is received favorably, though no official changes have so far been made.
- 8:06: (OPEN) TheGreatTarbolin69 brings up recent discussion about restricting Community Server access to users who do not contribute to the RPC multiverse. ("Contributor roles" are generally defined as: writers, artists, readers with the Theta role, and Discord server boosters.) Two proposals are discussed: requiring a contributor role to access the #off-topic and #politics channels, or giving new users a time window (possibly three or six months) to demonstrate interest before their access is removed. 8ismo suggests using trial periods to test both proposals. Discord staff plan to implement a system shortly.
- 27:07: (OPEN) ThermicLine brings up recent complaints regarding a slur on the custom slot machine image used by a bot in the Community Server. A replacement image was created by Mr Makor but has not been implemented. It was suggested that the image could instead be updated to reflect the latest wiki event. No change has been decided as of yet.
- 32:47: (OPEN) TheGreatTarbolin69 raises the topic of adding new hazards. It is suggested that new hazards could be voted on either biennially or coinciding with GD elections. Whether hazards fall under the jurisdiction of the entire writer base, the Docket team, or the Lore Heads (which have fallen inactive since Von Pincier retired without a replacement) is uncertain. The proper roadmap for future hazards has yet to be defined.
- 48:44: (CLOSED) televisionist proposes reverting the Community Server's 18+ age requirement to increase participation. This is received poorly by the rest of staff, who cite safety concerns and irritation caused by immature younger users, and the matter is dismissed.
- 58:42: Poll responses suggest that certain social media platforms are underutilized:
- (CLOSED) It is quickly agreed that the RPC Steam group is not a priority.
- (CLOSED) The r/TheRPCAuthority subreddit will remain active but is considered similarly unimportant.
- (OPEN) TheGreatTarbolin69 suggests the RPC Authority Twitter account share content from the Community Server's #rpc-art-repository.
- 1:00:39: (OPEN) 8ismo discusses a plan for branching social media outreach to TikTok and Instagram, possibly involving the formation of a new social media team. No further consideration has been made.
- 1:14:11: (CLOSED) ThermicLine brings up the inactivity of staff member ICFD (who is not present at the meeting) and sends him a message. ICFD officially retired from staff the next day.
- 1:24:25: (OPEN) televisionist suggests posting a Community Server announcement a week in advance of contest deadlines to curb last minute entries in the future.
- 1:31:29: (OPEN) 8ismo proposes a new direction for the next writing event: instead of selecting a specific event theme, writers would submit and vote upon areas of lore for the Contest Team to design the event and material around. This proposal is to be discussed by the Contest Team.
- 1:55:44: (CLOSED) 8ismo announces that an independent designer has been working on a tabletop game that may be RPC-themed and asks whether this project could be promoted on the official wiki. Consensus accepts it so long as there is a playable, RPC-themed prototype, and that the wiki will not promote a third-party crowdfunding campaign.
- 2:08:43: (OPEN) I propose a new layout for the RPC topbar. The prototype can be seen here. This proposal awaits a Community Server writer vote before it can be implemented.
