This is a collaboration between me and my buddy Almarduk as our entry for Broader Horizons that landed us in 3rd place! It was inspired by my love of early internet culture, cyberpunk media (especially Serial Experiments Lain, probably the biggest influence here), and Catholicism.

This is an astoundingly effective and evocative work. The detail here is uncompromising. The fidelity in the media bits are impressive and go a long way in establishing the believability that is so crucial to this anomaly and makes this article tick. Excellent treatment of show-don't-tell. One of the few works I've read lately that justifies its length. The action is directed — there is no lallygagging around here. I appreciate the authors taking out unnecessary fluff and getting right to the point, e.g. the operation icewalker exploration report, which in worse hands, could have been a slogging word-for-word transcription casting unmemorable and generic tactical team stand ins.
The characters are focused and realistic. I'd say 9/10 articles that have this extent of dialogue causes the eyes to completely gloss over — immediately or eventually — but the characterization and play of these chat rooms logs made me forget all about their length and breeze through them with interest (and I have read *a lot* of IRL logs).
I can't say enough good things about this. Immediately hard-hitting while also being very subtle.
One small note re: the chronology of the media bits:
Memberberries are mentioned in the 4chan mock, dated 2006. The South Park episode was released in 2016. Maybe this is an internet thing that was around before then, not sure, but just wanted to point it out!

Anyway I've read this over the course of three days and I can say it kept my attention afloat by the chatlog segments. There's lots of memorable moments throughout, and I love the idiosyncrasies of THE REAL's users. And as someone who has no attachment to old internet aesthetics and culture, it was pleasant to read! I even felt prompted to learn the origins of the term noob and its meaning too. The anomaly is unnerving in how innocuous it presents itself at first yet even then I knew it would creep its narrative to something quite disturbing, and I say it do so successfully in its drawn out pacing of the article.
Perhaps I will come to appreciate it more once I have a better grasp on the Omega Iota implications on the concept. I have read 562 a while ago and this probably hinges on the victims of that, but since it has been a while its relying on my already hazy memories of it. Regardless I did enjoy reading this, even when I felt lacking in a fulfilling reveal.
