The rhythm of the story is done great, with even the flashback not feeling like a pause in the story. Despite being posed as a sort of “origin” of José as he appears in the modern age, it is a story that does not feel like it is leading into an obvious sequel that will never come. It’s a story that can stand on its own while perfectly fitting into the setting and larger narrative. A single conversation between a man and himself in his dying moments has done wonders in characterizing the people connected to Amazing!Co.

The prose and descriptions are equally praise worthy. Without going into too much detail, it paints a wonderful picture that very nicely portrays the mental and physical state of José. The bugs at the edge of the vision, the Señor (whose appearance and behavior is amazing as well) appearing in front of the sun, the store scene with his wife - it is great.

The Señor at times veers close to lore baiting, but as long as his comments stay relevant to José the story will suck you in and keep you there. It is a great adaptation of the western “Devil in the desert”, and one that fits Amazing!Co. like a glove despite being as far away as it can get in its modern iteration.
