I actually have to disagree with Gismo. I think the article makes good use of water as a metaphor/analogy/thing to represent the flow of time and impermanence of kings as opposed to sand- the last few lines replacing the lone and level sands with the low and level flood. Here’s my thoughts:

+ show block

– hide block

I think what’s happening here is that while sand wears things down and blows away, basically disappearing, water flows. The people down here and the kings don’t die or disappear, they’re carried downstream, and this stream pools into the well, which is this weird underground church.

I’m pretty sure this church is an area where time pools. People here don’t die, the Authority finds more bodies than they should, and memories are present and palpable, just deeper in the water.

So, the winged king is like a slurry of past kings, a patriarchal smoothie. I think this is referencing how as a culture we have this archetype of an absolute monarch that is an aggregate of all these historical figures we mesh together. This empty monarch is who we think of when we think king.

I wonder if this article would’ve been different if it was written after memotics and the infoplane came out. Is the church sort of like a drain?

Whether or not I’m reading too much into this, I enjoyed this article. It’s very disquieting, and evocative. Is the ending log a little overboard (hehe)? I think so, but I can’t think of a way to change it other than simplifying it in a way that would make it unsatisfying, so I won’t hold that against the article. Five stars.

There is a lot of very evocative images and interesting collection of scenes. But the issue is that in the end it does not lead to some significant conclusion or point. It's a collection of separate moments, thematically and topically bound, but missing an end, something that puts a bow at the end. There's a dime a dozen articles of sleeping gods, their cults and their churches - this article doesn't go above such an article beside having very interesting imagery and language.

Thank you all so much for your votes, positive or negative. I'm so happy I won this contest.

But special thanks to moistbread, vizlox, coupon, TTPY, Baubius, and Tarbolin for their support and feedback.

Some things to think;

Twenty-one people were affected in the first incident, but twenty-two bodies were recovered. Why?

"Emotional tears" doesn't necessarily mean sad (or happy) tears

CSD-797's journey has a meaning, but what is it?

Why does the steel box from 747 and 992 appear here?

Who is UNKNOWN, and to what GoI are they related?

What happened to UNKNOWN to begin with?

Who is Ozymandias?
